5 Good Reasons to Visit Germany
Filled with everything from historic castles to energetic beer festivals, Germany is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Don’t let the sheer number of amazing attractions intimidate you! I have collected some of the best locations to visit on your trip to Germany.
A Piece of History
The Berlin Wall is one of the most recognized pieces of German history. The wall stood between East and West Germany, dividing the country and its people during the cold war. The Bradenburg Gate was one of the few ways for German citizens to pass between the two sides of the country, and today it stands as a reminder of the unity that was rediscovered when the wall was torn down. It is often considered the national symbol for the country of Germany. Originally constructed in 1791, the gate itself is a symbol of peace and victory. If you are interested in seeing a piece of history, consider visiting Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.
Walk in the Woods
You can’t plan a German vacation without spending at least one day in The Black Forest. In spite of its name, the forest is filled with amazing trees, rolling green hills and some of the most delightful tours in the country. It is home to wine, historic monasteries, the origin of the cuckoo clock and, of course, Black Forest Cake! Two tours in the area are highly recommended: The Wine Route takes thirsty travelers on a tour of the wine growing areas and local wineries while the German Clock Route allows visitors to follow the history of the German Cuckoo Clock. Don’t forget to find yourself a slice of authentic Black Forest Cake while you’re visiting the area. You can never go wrong with chocolate cake, cherries and whipped cream, especially when you follow it up with a sweet shot of cherry schnapps!
Every Disney Fan’s Dream
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking around a Disney princess’ castle, then Germany is the perfect place for you. Newschwanstein Castle, commissioned by King Ludwig II and completed in 1892, is one of the most popular and wellknown castles in the world. Why? This stunning piece of architecture served as the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in the Disney film of the same name. The castle was opened to the public in 1886 after Ludwig II’s death and has hosted millions of visitors over the years. It should definitely be on the tosee list when you make your way to Germany!
Don’t Mind the Speed Limit
Germany is a great place to visit for people who just can’t get enough of speed: The German Autobahn is a 7,500 milelong stretch of road that crosses most of the country. It’s an engineering marvel, but that isn’t what attracts most of its visitors. Most people come to experience the Autobahn because certain sections of this monstrous highway have no speed limit. Don’t believe the myth: Many travel sites claim that the Autobahn has no speed limit whatsoever, but that’s not exactly true. While some areas will let you open the throttle and fly, most areas have a set speed limit. These are almost always placed because of hazardous driving conditions or because the Autobahn passes through urban areas. If you want to put the pedal to the metal, make sure you do some research on Autobahn road etiquette and find out what your requirements are for a vacation drive.
Can’t Forget the Beer
You can’t plan a German vacation without trying at least a few local beers, and what better place to do that than in the Hofbrauhaus in Munich? While you can find other beer houses like this around the world, the one in Munich is without doubt the oldest and most wellknown of its kind. The idea of the beer house was first imagined by Wilhelm V, the Duke of Bavaria. He didn’t import beer in 1589, when his household didn’t like the Munichbrewed variety — he decided to build his own brewery! Today, this historic treat can seat up to 1,300 unique and energetic individuals at a time. Just be careful if you’re not used to German beer: It’s a lot stronger than other beers and can easily catch you off guard.
If you’re planning your trip in October, make sure you swing by Oktoberfest! What originally began as a wedding celebration in 1810 has evolved over the years into one of the most flamboyant, extravagant and delightfully overthetop events in the world. People come from all over the world to drink German beer, eat delicious German food and take part in an amazing tradition that is often imitated but can never been truly duplicated. If Oktoberfest is part of your plan, make sure you budget for it. Beer can get expensive when you’re drinking all day long! If you have the money and the constitution for it, Oktoberfest can be an amazing once in a lifetime experience.
Germany is a beautiful county that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. There is much to see and do, even if you’re not a beer drinker! The country has a rich history that must be experienced in person to get the full effect.
