0Taormina Film Fest
The 57th Taormina Film Fest, the major movie event of the Italian summer, will take place from June 11 to 18, 2011, right in Taormina, lovely holiday resort in Sicily.
Organized by the Taormina Arte Committee with the support of the Sicilian Region, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, the City Administration and other important institutions and private sponsors, the Taormina Film Fest – directed since 2007 by American journalist and film critic Deborah Young – ever since the same year has assumed a Mediterranean identity, becoming a focal point for the film culture of this region.
Guests of honor for the 2011 edition will be the Maghreb countries Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco: their cinema and culture will be celebrated through a retrospective of contemporary films, and a final “Maghreb Grand Gala”, that will take place in the suggestive Teatro Antico in Taormina.
The review on the Maghreb and its guests will be the cross-referring subjects of the whole Festival, but the week will be full of other important events and appointments.
Starting from the numerous prizes awarded at the many competitions and sections of the Festival.
In addition to the renowned Mediterranea Competition, whose eight selected films will be screened at the Fondazione Roma Mediterraneo Hall, the Taormina Film Fest still welcomes international cinema with the Beyond the Mediterranean Competition, with spectacular evening screenings within the most charming open-air cinema in the world, the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, still considered one of the most important and best preserved monuments in Sicily.
Among the prizes awarded during the festival, worth a mention the 4 Golden Tauro Awards for the best movies of the Mediterranean area, as well as the famous Taormina Arte Award, awarded every year in the frame of the Teatro Antico (Ancient Theatre) to directors, actors and actresses who have made vital contributions to international cinema.
Moreover, for the fourth consecutive year, will be held the NICE Sicilian short films competition, with the Award for Best Short Film directed by a Sicilian born or living in Sicily.
One of the most prestigious sections of the festival is the Great Cinema at the Greek Theatre, involving both tourists and movie fans, which consists in the screening of great preview movies to be enjoyed in the enchanting Greek-Roman amphitheater, dating back to 2,300 years ago and able accommodate up to 5,000 spectators. This year, the big wait is for 3D Kung Fu Panda.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office of Taormina Arte – Palazzo dei Congressi, at the TicketOne box offices or BoxOffice sales points in Sicily. Prices for the screenings at the Ancient Theatre are € 12.00 on the numbered stalls and € 8.00 on the unmarked steps.
