0Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival: concerts, theatre and culture
The famous Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival, directed by Johannes Kunz, is one of the most elegant Jazz Festivals in Europe and has always attracted the interest of musicians and Jazz enthusiasts. The accompanying Salzburg’s Old Town Jazz event, instead, is all about young local artists who perform in the streets and clubs of the historical centre – with free admission.
The “Salzburger Jazz Herbst” has taken place every year since 1996. It gathers international jazz stars and especially Austrian jazz musicians. Since 1999 the Festival has also received support from the City and province of Salzburg, becoming a major festival on an international level.
Now at its 16th edition, the Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival will be held, this year 2011, from October 26 to November 6. The artists who perform in front of an enthusiastic audience, range from legendary stars to new talents not yet known to the general public.
Besides the previously mentioned Old Town Jazz event, there will be another corollary event of great interest. It is ‘Jazz In The Movies’, a series of film presentations in honor of the old and new jazz legends.
But who are these legends? Well, you can find some of them at the same Salzburg Festival.
This year’s programme of the Salzburger Jazz Herbst is probably the most versatile in the history of this event. Artists of the caliber of Paul Anka and Dionne Warwick – who has sold millions of records; R’n’B representatives Bettye LaVette, Ryan Shaw and China Moses, whose live performances are sided by movies showing the greatest Blues and Soul stars (movies by great artists like Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood and Wim Wenders will be screened).
Among the great Jazz soloists taking part to the Festival, worth a mention Chucho Valdes with his Afro Cuban All Stars, the Jeremy Pelt Quintet, the Miguel Zenon Quartet, as well as new stars like Vijay Iyer, Hiromi and Tia Fuller.
And finally, also Austrian Jazz, as always, will have its place at the Salzburger Jazz Herbst: in addition to the “Jazz in Austria” exhibition, a photo-exhibition by Prof. Klaus Schulz, you will enjoy a very special concert: Der Doyen des österreichischen Jazz, where tenor Hans Solomon will perform with his Vienna Big Band Machine, which boasts the most important musicians of the day.
The Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival is organised by Salzburger Jazz-Herbst Veranstaltungs GmbH in co-operation with Vienna Entertainment. Wonderful music in the backdrop of a wonderful city: just enjoy.
