O2 Glasgow Mela in the name of multi-culturalism

The O2 Glasgow Mela 2011 will be celebrated on June 18 – 19, at the Kelvingrove Park of Glasgow, between Kelvin Way and Kelvingrove Street.

Mela means “gathering” in Sanskrit, and that’s just what the Glasgow Mela is – a gathering to celebrate the multi-cultural self of Glasgow, inspired by the Indian culture in Scotland and the UK. The motto is “one people, one nation one mela”. Music, good food and shimmering saris are the ingredients for this incredible free Summer event in Glasgow, which will be at its 21st edition this year. This will be a weekend full of fun and attractions, with free entertainment dance, arts and live music shows.

Originally created in 1990 on the occasion of Glasgow’s celebrations as European City of Culture, The O2 Glasgow Mela is now one of the largest events of the country and allows everyone to experience and celebrate different cultures. Over the years visitors from all over the world have been entertained and enthralled by music, dance and interactive arts with the opportunity to celebrate their shared diversity.

This year, the event will last two days, a whole weekend. Three stages of live music and entertainment will be set up, with performances by Mumzy Stranger, Bass2base, DCS, Siddi Dhamal Dance and many others. You will have the opportunity to sample and enjoy foods from the east, as well as exotic foods and spices from around the globe or relax in a beer garden while getting involved in the vibrant, multi-cultural atmosphere of the O2 Glasgow Mela.

There is also a kids zone, dedicated to the little ones, with arts and music workshops, Bodyworks Exhibits, a Fun Fair – of course, and a novelty of this year, the Cadbury Spots v Stripes, on the occasion of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where children can take part in games including Giant Jenga, Frizzy Winks, Jumbo Dominoes and more!

Visitors to the event are strongly encouraged to use public transport as there is no official parking at the event location. You can get to the Mela by Subway – Kelvinhall, Hillhead and Kelvinbridge stations are all 5-10 minutes’ walk from the park , by Bus or by train – the nearest train stations are Charing Cross and Exhibition Centre.

In the area you will find plenty of accommodation opportunities, from budget to 5 star luxury hotels. For any further information visit the Mela website, and share your 02 Glasgow Mela experience with us.
