0Mantua – among art and literature
A weekend in Mantua is always well spent. The city has a historical centre that is easy to explore, with many monuments and buildings, witnesses of an important history. The city tour starts from Piazza Sordello, with Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Gonzaga, and the cathedral dedicated to St. Peter, then to move towards the historical squares as Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza Broletto on which stands the Palazzo del Podestà. Among the monuments to be seen, of course, Palazzo Te, dating back to 1500, with its magnificently frescoed halls.
And once the tour of the monuments and palaces of Mantua is over, the city opens its doors to all the cultural events that take place throughout the year. Such as ‘Altroteatro‘ which lasts until April and brings on stage interesting plays of literary works. Or the “Sunday Concerts” held at the Bibiena theater in Via Accademia: over 25 events are scheduled for the thirteenth edition of the show.
Starting from February you can enjoy the “Mondays of music“, fifteen concerts with the aim to engage young audiences in particular. Throughout the year, Sunday is also the day of the ‘Museum for families‘ with guided tours at discounted rates to Palazzo Te and Palazzo San Sebastiano. And until April there is “Orchestra Time” as well, with a program of great quality, which has gathered more than 2,000 participants in the edition of 2010.
However, the most important event is ‘Festivaletteratura‘ which takes place in autumn: a fun-filled cultural event, during which in various locations in the city are organized meetings, exhibitions, events. A moment that has gone beyond national borders, and greets tourists from all over Europe. In the days of Festivaletteratura, the hotels in Mantua are always packed: without an advanced booking it will be difficult to find free rooms.
