1Almeria: a little Hollywood in Europe
Almería is a Spanish town of just under 200 000 inhabitants in the region of Andalusia, Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea.
Besides being an important commercial port, Almeria is a historical city with many tourist attractions such as the church of Santiago of 1533, the Paseo de Coches, the scenic waterfront, the archaeological museum, the Cathedral built on the rubble of a mosque destroyed by an earthquake, the ancient fortress Alcazaba, the Chanca – dwellings carved into the rock, and of course all the areas across the Gulf Coast, with major towns and tourist resorts such as Mojacar, Almerimar and Roquetas de Mar.
However, the main attraction in the city are the film locations throughout the area, on the beaches and in the desert surrounding the city. In the area of Almeria, called “Little Hollywood”, countless western movies were filmed, because the atmosphere resembles that of Arizona and Texas: Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone shot here their first spaghetti-western, but Almeria was also the set of movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
For a few dollars more, Indiana Jones, Fort Bravo, The Wind and the Lion, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Rat Patrol, etc.. The Oasys theme park, known just as the Mini-Hollywood, preserves important movie sets in which professional actors perform scenes from western battles, shootings, assaults on banks and big rides, for tourists of all ages. The accommodation choice in Almeria is very wide. The hotels in town are very popular throughout the year because the area offers both summer and cultural tourism.
