There is no other place in Europe where <strong>concerts<\/strong>, music happenings, jam sessions, folk music and a hectic calendar of events have such a significant role in the city life.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThis is not a joke: music in Glasgow means a turnover of more than 75 million pounds per year. Glasgow has long been the capital of shipbuilding as well, and also because of the presence of workers and laborers it has always nurtured a strong tradition of folk music, as well as Liverpool and Manchester: the <strong>Celtic Connections Festival<\/strong> is one of the most important world events of traditional folk music.<br \/>\nGlasgow is home to major music colleges in Scotland: the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Scottish Opera, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>But in addition to classical and popular music, Glasgow is the beating heart of <strong>live music<\/strong>: it is estimated that every weekend at least 130 musical events are available for lovers of all types of music, from folk to techno-house.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most ancient and frequented places by locals and tourists are the <strong>King&#8217;s Tut&#8217;s Wah Hut<\/strong>, the Barrowlands, the <strong>02 Academy<\/strong>, the Twofatladies, the Scotia12, <strong>Old Fruitmarket<\/strong>, the <strong>Oran Mor<\/strong>, but also the church Kelvinside in the West End or the RAB&#8217;s, the City Merchant or Granny Black&#8217;s in Merchant City, while the home of <strong>Scottish folk<\/strong> is Ben Nevis in Argyle Street.<\/p>\n<p>In this beautiful city are born bands like <strong>Simple Minds<\/strong>, <strong>Tears for Fears<\/strong>, Deacon Blue, the Aztec Camera, <strong>Franz Ferdinand<\/strong> and musicians of the caliber of Malcolm Young of <strong>AC \/ DC<\/strong>, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Eric Woolfson of the legendary Alan Parsons Project.<\/p>\n<p>One last curiosity: the <strong>Caledonian University in Glasgow<\/strong>, after very serious and accredited studies, have identified the music to help in times of depression.
