The\u00a0country is definitely not known for hills, because the Netherlands is as flat as a pancake, right?<\/p>\n<p>For the majority of the country, that is correct. There is however a small area in the very south of the\u00a0Netherlands, on the border with Germany and Belgium, that makes you <strong>feel like being in another\u00a0country<\/strong>. The landscape changes the minute you enter <strong>the province of Limburg<\/strong>, the architecture\u00a0starts to distinguish itself from the rest of the country when you arrive in the south of this province\u00a0and a Burgundian vibe takes over.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7161\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7161\" class=\"wp-image-7161 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht-620x350.jpg\" alt=\"Maastricht\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maas river, Maastricht<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The most famous city in South-Limburg is <strong>Maastricht, a beautiful town<\/strong> that boasts historical buildings\u00a0and neighborhoods, city walls, boutique shops and plenty of quality dining possibilities. It\u2019s the city of\u00a0the famous violist Andr\u00e9 Rieu, of the Maas River, of the book shop in a church, and of the marlstone\u00a0caves. There is enough to do and to see to fill an entire day, but Limburg has much more on offer.<\/p>\n<p>This part of the country is <strong>excellent for hiking, cycling and for survival activities<\/strong>. Next to that, you can\u00a0visit <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vaalserberg\" target=\"_blank\">the Vaalserberg<\/a> an\u00a0original location where the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium meet and\u00a0therefore referred to as <i>Drielandenpunt<\/i> (&#8220;Three-Country Point&#8221;). \u00a0A\u00a0tall observation tower at the highest point of the Netherlands, provides you with stunning views of\u00a0the hilly landscape of the three countries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7159\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7159\" class=\"wp-image-7159 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Architecture-Epen-620x350.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture Epen\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Architecture-Epen.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Architecture-Epen-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Architecture in Epen, South Limburg<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Valkenburg is another popular place<\/strong>. It features many hotels and restaurants, and even a cable car\u00a0and toboggan run. Valkenburg is especially busy during December, when a large Christmas market\u00a0comes to life in one of the caves.\u00a0If you\u2019re looking for<strong> some quieter surroundings, Epen<\/strong> is a perfect place to start. Hiking in and around\u00a0this small town is a wonderful opportunity to take a closer look at the local architecture of the\u00a0region. Burgundian restaurants and cafes are scattered around the area and come in handy when\u00a0you want to relax and have a bite to eat. Or, maybe you prefer a local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gulpener.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gulpener beer<\/a> to quench your\u00a0thirst?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7158\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7158\" class=\"wp-image-7158 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/American-Cemetery-Margraten-620x350.jpg\" alt=\"American Cemetery Margraten\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/American-Cemetery-Margraten.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/American-Cemetery-Margraten-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monument at the American Cemetery Margraten<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Further up north is the Netherlands American Cemetery of Margraten, the only American military\u00a0cemetery in the Netherlands. This 65.50 acres cemetery counts 8,301 burials, and the names of 1,722\u00a0missing soldiers are written on tablets on the right and left of the entrance. It truly is an impressive\u00a0sight, especially because the entrance features a memorial pool and a statue representing a mother\u00a0mourning her lost son.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7163\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7163\" class=\"wp-image-7163 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Thorn-620x350.jpg\" alt=\"Thorn\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Thorn.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Thorn-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little White Town, Thorn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve paid your respects to the buried soldiers at Margraten, it\u2019s a short drive to the \u2018Little\u00a0White Town.\u2019 Thorn was given this nickname, due to the large amount of white houses the town\u00a0boasts. History of the town goes back to the 10th century, where after it developed in a miniature\u00a0convent ruled by an abbess and 20 ladies of noble birth. When the French arrived in 1794, tax was\u00a0charged based on the sizes of the windows. Since many people who lived in the large houses that\u00a0were once home to the aristocrats, couldn\u2019t afford this tax, the citizens closed up the windows with\u00a0bricks and painted their houses white to conceal the construction works. This is how the houses got\u00a0their white color, and can be found in that state still today.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7162\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7162\" class=\"wp-image-7162 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht-street-620x350.jpg\" alt=\"Maastricht street\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht-street.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Maastricht-street-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Street of Maastricht<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see, there\u2019s much more beyond the canals of Amsterdam. <a  href=\"http:\/\/blog.traveleurope.com\/en\/top-europe-destinations-2012-netherlands-the-country-of-flowers\/\">The Netherlands is a beautiful\u00a0country<\/a>, yet some areas are still relatively unknown.
