The famous Professional Windsurfers Association Tour<\/a> (PWA) is a\u00a0permanent fixture on the calendar in August \u00ad where El Medano sits alongside other worldclass wind\u00adwatersport meccas\u00a0like Maui, Ala\u00e7at\u0131 and Noumea.\u00a0Part of the charm of El Medano is it\u2019s Bohemiam surf culture vibe<\/strong>, while it\u2019s still touristy it\u2019s not what you\u2019d typically\u00a0expect when you imagine the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n

Weather<\/h3>\n

While the weather in El Medano could be considered mild all year round<\/strong> \u00ad July, August and September are the warmest\u00a0months with temperatures for land and sea toping out at 27 and averaging around 23 during the day. \u2018Winter\u2019 officially\u00a0runs from December through to February where temperatures average a respectable 18 with night time lows reaching 14.<\/p>\n

Where to Stay<\/h3>\n

El Medano isn\u2019t a big town \u00ad in fact there are currently just 14 hotels listed on Traveleurope.com<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0in the El Medano area, \u00adno big name 5 star hotels in this city. Vacationers who are more interested in\u00a0renting holiday apartments should take a look at Short Term Renting<\/a> where\u00a0there is a good selection of different styled apartments on offer, currently there are 68 listings. Where to Eat (and Drink)<\/h3>\n

El Medano town<\/strong> has a number of nice seaside cafes, restaurants and some dam good tapas bars. Aside from the odd high\u00a0end Spanish and Italian restaurant, the food scene in El Medano is much like the rest of the town \u00ad easy going and\u00a0effortlessly good.\u00a0Located just off the sea front on Avenida Amalia you will find traditional Spanish food at Recuncho Celta<\/a>, for a good thin crispy based\u00a0Spanish styled pizza you can\u2019t go past Pizzeria Wairua. If for some unbelievable reason you get a little tired or the local\u00a0food \u00ad or just fancy something different \u00ad stop by Hong Kong which is conveniently located sea side for some tasty and\u00a0well priced Chinese fare.<\/p>\n

Surf Schools<\/h3>\n

You certainly don\u2019t have to be a pro or even an amateur windsurfer to enjoy the perfect wind and water conditions of El\u00a0Medano. Surf schools line the coast<\/strong> and are in plentiful supply for those brand new to the sport and looking to learn.\u00a0When selecting a school, make a point to meet the instructors and get a good feel if you will be comfortable with them,\u00a0as with any action sport there\u2019s a fair amount of trust you will need to put in your Mr Miyagi. It\u2019s also important to note\u00a0weather your instructor will be in the water with you providing guidance as you learn and isn\u2019t just going to leave you to\u00a0it while they watch from beach, San Miguel in hand when the wind picks up and you are hoisted 10 feet in the air like\u00a0Mary Poppins.\u00a0Check the refund policy too, as with any weather dependent sport, conditions aren\u2019t always ideal and refund policies\u00a0vary between schools.<\/p>\n

Other Activities in El Medano<\/h3>\n

Even if you aren\u2019t a big water sports fan there plenty of things to do in and around El Medano<\/strong>. Here are some of the top\u00a0things you should look to do to entertain yourself while you are in town<\/p>\n

Mountain biking<\/h3>\n

Down hill, single track or cross country, hire a bike get out of El Medano and see more of Tenerife<\/a>, don\u2019t miss Mount\u00a0Teide if you fancy a bit of down hill. Do some self guided exploring and check out the trails of other riders on\u00a0EveryTrail<\/a>\u00a0or for a more social experience, hook up with a local mountain bike expedition company so they can show you their best\u00a0trails.<\/p>\n

Road biking<\/h3>\n

If you are into road biking there are several places in El Medano you can hire a high spec bike that will make you feel\u00a0like you were on your own bike back at home\u00ad try Bike Point<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0SportCenter<\/a>. Have a chat to\u00a0the boys in the bike shop to get some local knowledge so you can go it alone or else get involved in an organised trip to\u00a0discover more of Tenerife.<\/p>\n

Nude sunbathing<\/h3>\n

The island of Tenerife is well know for it\u2019s nudest beaches and while nude sunbathing often conjures up images of\u00a0wrinkly whales for many non nudists, if you are daring they could be worth an errrm..look.\u00a0Head to the little black sand hide away that is Playa de La Pelada beach<\/strong>, be sure to pack plenty of suncream and a sexy\u00a0hat!\u00a0If you’re a bit of a prude or just scared of prunes there are plenty of non designated nude beaches around \u00ad visit the long\u00a0sandy Playa El Medano or the more relaxed Tejita Playa<\/p>\n

Hiking<\/h3>\n

With it\u2019s beautiful coastline and mountainous backdrop El Medano is the ideal place<\/strong> to put some wear on those\u00a0hiking boots. If you enjoy hiking you are probably already familiar\u00a0with Wikiloc<\/a>\u00a0which has over a hundred one way\u00a0and loop trails listed in the El Medano area ranging from easy rated 2 mile walks to the 20 mile difficult rated hikes.<\/p>\n

El Medano isn\u2019t exactly famous for being a shopping hotspot \u00ad though you will find some lovely boutique stores<\/strong> selling\u00a0handmade goods along with arts and crafts. There are also a good amount of surf shops incase you needed a new bikini\u00a0or a new wetsuit.\u00a0If you are lucky enough to be in town on Saturday, make sure you check out the weekly El Medano market, it\u2019s a high\u00a0end hippy market which reflects the tastes and style of El Medano.<\/p>\n

Fly into the largest international airport in the Canary\u2019s \u00ad Tenerife South Airport<\/a> (TFS) and spend a week or a month\u00a0honing those kite boarding skills.
